By the time Bulma had return from her jog the darkness of night had descended like a velvet shroud. The stars were bright enough to make the shadows dance over the ground and the walls of buildings. Any normal woman would have thought it was creepy, but not Bulma.
Maybe it was because she had already encountered what was to be encountered in the shadows this night or maybe it was because her new strength made her unafraid.
She returned home a bit more sore than she had been before she set out. Her muscles ached to thank her for the training she was putting them through. Her body appreciated this as much as her psyche.
As the young woman marched up the stairs of her parent's home she smiled. There were some really strong people out there, and some of them had an air of mystery about them that caught her curiosity and held it for ransom. Some day she would have to face the mysterious stranger again if for no other reason then to find out what he really looked like. He was strong and well dressed so she assumed he was handsome. This made her smile even more.
Quietly she turned the door knob to her room and flipped the light switch. She was greeted by sweet, sweet order. The chaos of the day was no longer in the same plane of existence she dwelled in and that thought made her happy. This was her own private sanctuary from the world.
Bulma's bedroom was girly, that was for certain. Decorated with flowers and flowy pink and blue linens, no one would guess this room belonged to a scientist until they looked on her desk.
Stacks of science books; engineering, advanced robotics, and a manual on rewiring electronics were some of the more well worn books.
Beside her desk was a vanity table. Along with the face powders, lotions, perfumes, and lipsticks there were also wires, small tools, and the shell of some small device that looked like a watch.
Bulma sighed at the sight of it. A project she longed to complete. She dreamed of one thing more than anything else, finding the dragonballs and wishing for a boyfriend.
She had first heard the story of the dragonballs, well, not really heard, more read, in a book about legends. Apparently this legend was over a hundred years old. The story told of a strong young man who went out seeking the dragonballs and found all but one before he died a strange and unusual death.
The young scientist shuddered. What if they were really cursed, not blessed? What if the wish would come back around as something bad like the stories about evil genies? What if the legend wasn't true and went out searching but never found anything? No. She would find something, she was sure of it.
As she fell back onto her bed Bulma let enough sigh escape. One day soon she would have to go looking for at least one so she could finish her invention and look for the others. The story told of seven. How long would she have to search for seven small balls? How big was the world in comparison, really? How big was the universe? Well, she would just have to ask some of the smartest people she knew, or at least the oldest.
Master Roshi was pretty old but she thought Master Turtle might be older. Maybe one of them would know if there was life other than what was on Earth. As a scientist she would not be able to just assume there was even if she really wanted there to be until she had some kind of undeniable proof. Until she had that she would not be able to accept the stories she had read about visitors from beyond the stars as anything more than science fiction.
“That reminds me,” Bulma mumbles as she jumped up and groaned at her sore legs as she walked over to her desk.
After moving her science books from the pile she found two science fiction romance novels she had been saving. She took the first one and opened it, it was about a princess of one planet that was at war with another planet where a prince lived. It was a science fiction Romeo and Juliet. She had overheard someone in the book store say the ending was better than the actual story. As the words flowed over the page a picture began to form in her mind.
-The princess stood on the balcony in her white night dress, the two moons in the distance illuminated everything in a purple light. She reached out to the nearby planet of Terra and sighed heavily.
“Oh handsome Ooji, I wish you were here now to console me. I have such terrible news.”
Little did she knew the handsome young prince was standing right below her window, his blue skin shining in the light of the purple moons.-
“Ohh, this is good,” Bulma giggled and read on.
-The prince called out to the princess. His voice was as strong and unwavering as her undying love for him.
“What news have you?”
Startled the princess looked down below her window and smiled, her pink hair falling into her face.
“I have been promised to wed a wealthy lord whom I have no love for. I only love one man.”
“How could you be promised to someone against your will. Swords shall clash!”
“No! There will be no blood. I must do this for my world. For peace.”
“There will be no peace until this land is ruled by someone who is both happy and kind. Deny this lord and tell them who you choose. We can end the war!”
“Not like this in this life time.”-
Bulma felt a tear run down her cheek. It was terrible to want something so much and not be able to have it. The writing was not very good but the story was solid. She put the book away and dried her eyes. That was too much sadness for her at the moment.
Slowly she slipped off the other side of her bed, being careful of her sore legs, and walked over to the window. Reaching to open the curtains she paused. What if someone was out there? It could really freak her out.
After a couple deep breaths Bulma pulled open the curtains and looked up into the sky. The stars were so bright! Even the lights of the city could not hide them tonight. Quickly she set up her telescope and centered it on a random star. Carefully she adjusted the settings until she could see that the star was really a star cluster. These were the things that made a scientist happy.
Now that she had contented herself with the stars she could take a shower and get some rest. Tomorrow was going to be a big day.
