Once again Bulma found herself dressing early in the morning for training. She was much stronger than she had been before and she felt it was time to move on to learning new things but first she had to meet with Turtle to discuss who she would be training with. Would she still have to train with Master Korin or that Yajarobi guy? What kind of person was Korin anyway?
Deciding that worrying about stuff like that before she got to Roshi’s island was silly and it was best she get on the road, well, in the air rather. Bulma had decided she would carry her capsules with her but not use them unless she had to. Besides, the windy weather would give her a chance to fly against something and it could go a long way to strengthening her ki.
Bulma was careful to not just see what was around her but to use her other senses too. Fighting the alien in the dark helped with that but it was clear to her that it was easier for her to see in the dark when she spent a lot of time walking in it. Besides, it was good training in general.
Her training with Gohan had also helped. Still, it wasn’t enough for her and it wouldn’t be until she could defeat all opponents she encountered, not just those she already knew or the ones she was friends with. Bulma wanted to face and defeat those who would seek to do harm to herself or other good people.
She flew on until she reached the sea, the air crisp and salty tickled her nose and made her sneeze. Bulma landed for a moment to get used to the air. As she stretched a familiar voice called out from the ocean.
“Hey Bulma!” Turtle yelled at the top of his voice.
The young woman grinned and strolled over to her Master. “Good morning Turtle. What brings you out here?”
“A test. If you can carry me back to the island you will get to move on to a new master. If you can not then we will train some more.”
“I see,” Bulma began, “Can I fly to the island?”
“As long as you can carry me there you can.”
Bulma picked Turtle up and put him on her back, “Kame house here we come.”
She took to the air. If it took any effort at all to lift the turtle or to fly she Bulma not show it.
It wasn’t long before Bulma reached the island with Turtle on her back. There to meet them was Master Roshi, stop watch in hand.
“That took less time than I thought it would. However, she isn’t ready to train with me. I think a week or two with Korin will give her all the skill she needs. Even then she would have to train with someone else. I think Yajarobi said he was willing to do it but I think she needs to train with Kami as well. Yes, Bulma you have a lot of work to do still.” Master Roshi never took his eyes off the stop watch the whole time he spoke.
“I agree, Master. She should go train with Korin to learn more skills if nothing else,” Turtle said as he motioned for Bulma to set him down.
Bulma landed and set Turtle on the beach and then took a look at the stop watch. That took less time than her last trip here. “Then I guess I will be training with Korin. What can you tell me about him?”
“Well, he’s not what you would expect,” Roshi began, “Definitely not what I expected.”
“Wait, you were trained by Korin?” Bulma asked as more of a courtesy than true curiosity. All these martial arts masters trained together at some point she assumed.
“Yeah but you have to follow the rules. You have to climb the tower and play his ‘game‘. When you win the game your training is over.” Turtle replied while Roshi reflected on his own training.
“I see. Well, I guess I’ll have to play whatever game he has planned. I should probably get started looking for his tower.” Bulma run her fingers through her hair and sighed, it was going to be a long day.
Master Roshi must have heard Bulma’s words because he pulled out a rolled up map and handed it to her, “Yajarobi left this for you. He said it will help you find the tower.”
“Alright Yajarobi! I knew he was a good guy,” Bulma exclaimed as she took the map and unrolled it. The location of the tower was clearly marked.
“Bulma, you should get going, Korin will be expecting you.” Turtle pointed in the direction of the tower.
“Right, I’ll be back again when I’m done training with Korin.” Bulma waved good bye to the island’s inhabitants and flew off.
After an hour of flying the young scientist landed in a tall tree took out her map. “It says I’m close.” She rolled up and map and looked around. In the distance she could see the tower, “Oh wow!”
Bulma quickly made her way to the tower, excitement building with every mile she flew. It wasn’t long before she made it to the base. No one was here to meet her thankfully because she had to practically plow into the tower to stop herself she was flying so fast. Bulma made a mental note to take greater care to watch her flying speed. Maybe she would build a device to help with that when she got home.
As the young woman looked up at the tower she would have to climb she began to wonder if this was all really worth it. Apparently it was because she began climbing with little more thought on the matter. Section by section higher and higher Bulma climbed until she reached a halfway point where she could stop for water and a breath.
“This isn’t as easy as I thought it would be,” she wiped a bead of sweat from her forehead and stuck her water bottled back in her bag, “But I’ll get it done.”
Bulma started her climb again and this time didn’t stop until she reached the top. She took out her water bottle and took a sip of water.
“You must be Bulma, I’ve been expecting you,” a voice spoke from no discernable location.
“Yeah, I am, you must be Korin, where are you?”
“I’m upstairs, join me if you want to.”
Bulma put away her water and climbed the stairs. There at the top was a cat holding a walking stick. She tilted her head to the side. After being trained by a turtle a cat made more sense to her.
“They didn’t tell me much about you before I came here but here I am.”
Korin circled her slowly, “Yes, I figured as much.” He paused a moment, “This is the first time I will have trained a girl.”
“They did mention something about a game.”
“Oh yes, the magic water,” Korin tapped a jeweled bottle on top of a pedestal. “If you can drink it you will become stronger and if you can not then you might still become stronger.”
“What does that mean?”
“Why don’t you give it a try and find out?”
Bulma walked forward and attempted to pick up the bottle. Before her hand reached it the bottle was gone. She looked to Korin, who was balancing it on his walking stick.
“I see now!” Bulma watched Korin’s movements as she attempted to grab the bottle, failing each time.
“This is going to be tricky. You don’t have a pattern that is easy to detect,” Bulma contemplated her next move.
“Ah, that’s good, that was going to be one of my lessons.” Korin turned away from Bulma.
Taking this as her chance, Bulma attempted to grab the bottle but Korin was too fast for her. She should have known this wasn’t going to be easy. Was this what Master Roshi had to do? If he succeeded then he had to be wicked fast.
“Give up yet?” Korin asked with a laugh.
“I don’t give up easily. I’m planning.”
“Too much thought and not enough action and nothing ever gets done.”
“True but acting without thinking is foolish no matter how you look at it.”
“Ah so you’re not a stupid one. That’s good maybe I’ll have someone with the same
IQ as me to talk to for at least a little while.”
“Really now?” Bulma was curious what the cat meant by that but it wasn’t that much of an issue. Somehow she had to get that bottle. Tricking him would be against the purpose of it all. Shrugging it off she decided to ask another question. “So how did Master Roshi get the bottle?”
“He tried for three years to try to get it but he too wouldn’t resort to trickery either. Some code of honor or some such.”
“Well, It looks like I’m in for a long stay here, I’m glad I brought my things.”
